Lady Gaga’s Favorite Part of the Engagement Ring Wasn’t the Huge Diamond

After some speculation from the press, singer Lady Gaga has revealed her engagement to actor Taylor Kinney, her boyfriend since 2011.

Kinney, 33, popped the question on Valentine’s Day, and Gaga (real name Stefani Germanotta) posted her engagement ring pic hours later on Instagram.

“He gave me his heart on Valentine’s Day, and I said YES!” reads the caption on the black and white photo.

The couple then went out to Joanne Trattoria, the New York City restaurant owned by Gaga’s family.

But the big news this week wasn’t just the engagement itself: the ring is a big deal. As Gaga’s Instagram pic reveals, the ring features a large, heart-shaped diamond with an estimated weight of about six carats. It was custom designed by Lorraine Schwartz, with input from Kinney.

On Thursday, Feb. 19, Gaga revealed her favorite part of the engagement ring, which was hidden from the original Instagram photo.

The underside of the ring, which is completely surrounded by diamonds, has the inscription “T [HEART] S” on the bottom in white diamonds, standing for “Taylor Loves Stefani.”

As Gaga explained on Instagram of her relationship with Kinney, “He always called me by my birth name. Since our very first date. I’m such a happy bride-to-be! I can’t stop smiling!!”

Most couples comparing engagement rings probably won’t get something like what Gaga has. Her ring comes with an estimated price tag of $400,000 to $500,000!

“Customizing rings is very common for jewelers to do. The most common task is to combine several different designs into one, or take an existing design and make it more substantial in order to prolong the life of the ring,” Kristina Mahler, partner at Diamonds Direct. “What’s in style these days is having a ring that isn’t necessarily in style; everyone wants something different — which makes our job much easier.”

One jeweler, who spoke to E! Online estimated that the ring has at least SI1 clarity of better and G color or better. The setting is a simple solitaire, but the ring itself has pavé diamonds down its sides.

Schwartz confirmed the attention to detail to InStyle magazine. “The stone is big and quite beautiful,” she said, “and actually more expensive than some of the estimates I have read.”

Of the ring’s creation, Schwartz explained, “It’s a challenge to get an excellent heart shape with perfections — the shoulders of the gem have to be totally symmetrical; Lady Gaga’s is all that.”

The couple hasn’t publicly set a date for their wedding yet. They met on the set of Gaga’s “You and I” video, in which Kinney played Gaga’s love interest.
