Kourtney Kardashian just bought a new house, but instead of celebrating in her new pad, she’s dealing with a mold issue.

The 35 year-old reality TV star (from “Keeping Up With the Kardashians”) claims that former NFL star Keyshawn Johnson, from whom she purchased the house, ripped her off when it came to settling the luxury home purchasing agreement.

The Los Angeles-area home she bought from the 42 year-old football star apparently has a mold infestation problem. The mold was apparently covered up by a coat of paint but quickly discovered by her interior decorator while installing light fixtures around the house.

Mold is a common household problem — yes, even for celebrities; it doesn’t discriminate, it just thrives on whatever water source that is available to it. Mold can enter a home through open doorways, windows, vents, and heating and AC units and loves leaky roofs, windows, pipes, or where there has been recent flooding.

Kourtney, the eldest of the Kardashian sisters, is expecting her third child in the coming months and feels that being exposed to this mold infestation is dangerous for her family and unborn child. As a result of these feelings, she has checked her family into the Montage hotel in Beverly Hills until a professional mold removal company arrives at the house to inspect the place.

Mold can cause serious health issues if exposed for a long period of time. Of the 21.8 million Americans who have asthma, an estimated 4.6 million cases are attributed to dampness and mold exposure in their home. Mold can cause itchy eyes, sneezing, coughing, and serious allergic reactions and even permanent lung damage.

Kardashian is thinking about pressing charges against Johnson, who is furious about her allegations. Johnson claims that in the two and a half years he lived in the house he never painted a single wall.

The NFL star also believes that the mold must have developed sometime after the house sold, most likely when a bathroom pipe sprung a leak. In his defense, Johnson states that if there were any mold in the house, he would have never purposely exposed his own young children to the fungus.

CNN Money has reported that over 30% of brand new homes build have mold of some sort in them, so Kardashian should probably take this mold issue with a grain of salt and understand that mold growth is a regular occurrence. “In addition to the inspection conducted by a home inspector, buyers should consider having a “mold inspection” done as well.
